Dingoes on the move!

In late 2005 The Australian Native Dog Conservation Society Ltd (ANDCS), which manages the Dingo Sanctuary at Bargo asked if they could move to Wirrimbirra Sanctuary as their lease was running out. (ANDSC is also a non-profit organisation, with similar but more specific aims to the Stead Foundation.  It is dedicated to preserving the pure dingo species.)

As part of their investigation the Board of the Stead Foundation (which currently manages Wirrimbirra Sanctuary) organised two discussion meetings for members of the Stead Foundation, and with the Dingo Sanctuary a public forum - to raise and discuss issues about the proposed move.  Discussions also took place with legal and financial advisers and the National Trust - who were happy with the concept.

Discussions with the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and Wollondilly Shire Council have also taken place and various surveys have been done of the proposed site within Wirrimbirra.

At an Extraordinary General Meeting of members of the Stead Foundation on 28th October 2006 the members voted (with a majority of both members present and proxy votes) to accept a proposed Memorandum of Understanding.

Resolution:

“That the document titled “Memorandum of Understanding” (MOU) between the Stead Foundation and the Native Dog Society dated 30th September 2006 be accepted by the Board of the David G. Stead Memorial Wild Life Research Foundation of Australia and the Terms and Conditions of the MOU agreed to.”

Some background to the resolution, and details of the Memorandum of Understanding are available on the links on the right.  (Note: Adobe Reader needed.  Click here if you do not have it and wish to install it.)

The development has been approved by Council, and an application to increase the number of dingoes at the Sanctuary has been approved by the DPI.   Construction of the dingo sanctuary area commenced in March 2008.

Even though the dingo sanctuary area has been officially opened, construction is not quite complete and all the dingoes have not yet been moved.  We will let you know as soon as we are open for public tours.

Once the dingoes have settled in, guided tours of the dingo sanctuary will be available at the following prices:

Adult:           $10

Concession:   $7.50

Child:            $5

Family:         $25

Bus Groups:   $5 pp

BOOKINGS PREFERRED – phone 4684 1112, Tuesday – Sunday.
